A Look Back: We're Pregnant!

For today's look back, I thought I would tell the story about how our family of two became three.

My husband, Andrew, and I had been married a few weeks shy of five years when we decided to try and start a family. There had been a few times in the past when one of us had been ready, but the other wouldn't be at that particular time. Then one day in December 2012 Andrew came home and told me that he had been thinking about it and he wanted a child and I immediately agreed! We decided that we didn't want to full-on try, we didn't want to watch the calendar or have the stress that can sometimes ensue when couples try to get pregnant, but rather we would just trust that God would bless us a child at the right time.

We didn't have to wait long! On Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at approximately 5:15 in the morning we found out that I was 5 weeks pregnant! We had both just woke up to get ready for work and I decided to take a test, without telling Andrew. I had taken a test the previous Friday afternoon because I had suspected that I was pregnant. I knew that Andrew wouldn't be home from work yet and that if the test came back positive I could let it soak in and then reveal the good news to him in a cute, Pinterest inspired way. But that test was negative. Even then though, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was pregnant. So that Wednesday morning I snuck in the bathroom, took the test and waited for the results. It was positive! At that moment there was no keeping that news from Andrew all day and waiting to tell him that night. The cute reveal was out the window, so I decided on a more subtle reveal...just kidding...I burst through the bathroom door, jumped on Andrew and screamed "You're gonna be a dad! You're gonna be a dad!". One of the single best moments of my life. I was laughing and crying {happy tears}. My whole world had changed in that moment, in the most beautiful way. I was going to be a mom!

It's positive!

Roses that Andrew gave me the day we found out!
We knew that we wanted to tell our families that we were pregnant in a way that we could capture the moments. I failed in that attempt with my sister. I told her THAT day! I told her as we split a brownie from one of our favorite bakeries, Sugarica. I just couldn't keep it from her, I was bursting at the seams to tell someone! And who better to tell than the girl I had spent my life next to, my best friend? Plus, she's really good at keeping a secret ;) I really regret that I didn't tell her in a more creative way and that I don't have that moment captured with a picture, but that's just what happens when you're living life in the moment.

We decided to tell my parents on March 30, the day before Easter and two days before their 30th wedding anniversary. We had dinner plans with them that night, so we asked them to meet us at my grandparent's house before dinner. We told them that we wanted to give them their anniversary presents a few days early. My dad opened his gift to find a coffee mug that said "I {heart} Grandpa" and my mom got a calendar that counted down the weeks until she was a grandma. They were both completely surprised!
The happy grandparents!

We told my husband's family the following day since we had plans to celebrate Easter with his family that afternoon. He really wanted to tell them while posing for a family picture, so we gathered them all for a family photo. The first picture is just a normal photo, the next one is a different story. While counting down to take the picture "3-2-1" style, it went a little something like "3-2-1-I'm pregnant"! I absolutely love that we captured the moment this way!

Andrew's face is priceless! And I'm pretty sure my MIL almost dropped my nephew!
I'm so happy that we got to surprise our families with the news, but I was unable to do so with my two closest friends....they figured it out all on their own. Kristal knew something was up when I didn't drink wine at our weekly Bible study. Lush, much? And I'm not sure exactly how Mia figured it out, but we'll just call it bestie intuition:

Besties know when something is up!

And that's the story of how we found out we were pregnant and how we told those closest to us! I'm over a year late in documenting it, but better late than never, right?!

Thanks for reading!
Angela
